An astounding 1 out of 3 pets will be lost during its lifetime! We have first hand experience hearing tales of cats and dogs that jump out of cars while they’re parked, are lost during air travel, slip their collar, get lost while hunting, or simply go missing. Collars break or slip off, rabies tags fall off. It’s startling how many pets find their way into the shelter system with nothing to identify them or their family.
Microchips are Safe and Nonreactive
Microchips are rice-sized oblong metal chips that are inserted safely under the skin of your pet. They do not emit any kind of signal or have any kind of power source contained in them. They are made out of a metal, that when stimulated by the signal of an external ‘reading device’, reflect back a unique identification number specific to the animal.
Microchips can be installed during your pet’s first spay or neuter procedure with us, but you don’t have to wait until your pet is anesthetized. Because microchips are so small, they can be injected under the skin at any time. The placement of the chips is no more painful than an annual vaccine injection.
How A Microchip Reunites You With Your Pet
If a pet is lost, it’s typically not long before they end up at a veterinary office, pound, shelter or other public animal welfare organization. All of these care centers have the necessary ‘reading device’ to scan for a microchip in a pet. An additional bonus is that all microchips are prominently visible on x-rays. When animals are brought to a location that has a microchip reader, they can typically be scanned and fully identified within 30 minutes of their arrival.
What to Do If I Lose My Pet
In the unfortunate event of a pet loss, place a call to our office and, if the pet is microchipped, we make one call to the microchip manufacturer. Instantly, alerts are sent to shelters and veterinary offices throughout Northfield, Dundas and beyond. In the case of pets that are traveling, alerts are sent to the area in which the pet was last seen. Alerts include a picture and description of your pet, along with a number to call when the pet is found. It’s important to note that in cases of air travel, pet microchips are often required.
Given the low cost of microchips, the ease of placement, and their general safety and effectiveness, we believe all pets should be microchipped.
